How yards grade clean mixed he9 aluminium
- The material must be extrusion: long profiles with a constant cross-section, such as window and door frames.
- Clean means no glass, rubber gaskets, plastic thermal breaks, steel screws, handles or hinges attached.
- Frames with fittings still in are graded as old rolled or irony aluminium instead, at a much lower rate.
- Cast aluminium — engine parts, gearbox casings, wheels — is a different family and is graded separately.
How to prepare it
- Remove glass and rubber gaskets from window frames.
- Pull out the plastic thermal break strips found in modern frames.
- Unscrew steel hinges, handles and screws — a magnet finds them quickly.
- Cut long profiles down to manageable lengths and keep them dry.
What affects the price
- Aluminium market reference prices.
- Contamination — steel, plastic and glass are the usual deductions.
- Alloy family: extrusions are melted into different products from castings.
- Load size and cleanliness.
The rules when you sell
Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, a licensed dealer in England or Wales cannot pay cash for scrap metal — payment must be by bank transfer or cheque. The dealer must also verify and record your identity, so bring photo ID and proof of address. These rules apply to every dealer, not just one yard.
Clean Mixed HE9 Aluminium FAQs
How much is 1kg of clean mixed he9 aluminium worth today?
Clean mixed HE9 aluminium is £1.00 – £1.40 per kg at Simvic in Chertsey (verified 25 Oct 2026). 5 kg would be worth about £5.00 – £7.00. Final price depends on condition; confirm before travelling.
What does HE9 mean on aluminium?
HE9 is a long-standing trade designation for a common architectural extrusion alloy used in window and door frames. Yards use it as shorthand for clean extruded aluminium, which is why the grade appears on our price list as clean mixed HE9.
Why is my aluminium priced as old rolled instead of clean HE9?
Old rolled covers sheet and extrusion with attachments or paint. If your frames still have glass, rubber, plastic thermal breaks or steel screws, they drop from the clean HE9 grade to a lower one — stripping them first can raise the rate.
Can I be paid cash for scrap aluminium?
No. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 bans cash payments for scrap metal at licensed dealers in England and Wales. Expect a bank transfer, and bring photo ID and proof of address.
