Where to sell scrap metal in London
London sellers usually choose between a licensed yard (a fixed site where you drop off) and a licensed mobile collector. Yards normally pay more per kg because there is no transport cost. The prices on this site come from Simvic, a yard at Unit 4, Ford Road, Chertsey, KT16 8HG, in Surrey.
How to check a dealer's licence
Every scrap metal dealer and mobile collector in England must hold a licence from their local council under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013. The Environment Agency keeps a public register of all licences issued. Search it by name, postcode or council before you sell, and check that the licence type (site or collector) matches what the business does.
What to bring
- Valid photo ID with your name and address, or photo ID plus proof of address — dealers must record this by law.
- Bank details: dealers cannot pay cash for scrap metal, so payment is by bank transfer or cheque.
- Metals sorted by type where you can — sorted loads are graded more accurately.
How London prices compare with the rest of the UK
There is no single official UK scrap price. Each yard sets its own buying prices from what it is paid by merchants and smelters, so prices vary between yards and change often. Yards in and around London have higher costs, but also more competition, so it is worth comparing a few licensed buyers. Our list is one yard's prices, not a UK average.
Before you travel, work out a figure with the scrap value calculator, compare scrap copper prices per kg and scrap brass prices, check what old car batteries are worth, or read how prices are checked.
