Scrap Iron Price per tonne today — £130–£150 (25 Oct)

Heavy iron is £0.13–£0.15 per kg (£130–£150 per tonne), verified 25 Oct 2026.

Cast iron turns up in old column radiators, roll-top baths, manhole covers, stoves and machinery. It is heavy, so even a single radiator can weigh a significant amount, but like steel it is priced at a low rate per kilogram.

Many yards grade cast iron together with heavy ferrous scrap, while some quote it separately. The table below shows only grades where we have a checked record.

Scrap iron price per tonne

Heavy iron is £0.13–£0.15 per kg (£130–£150 per tonne), verified 25 Oct 2026. Heavy iron is the headline grade and the confirmed buying unit is a metric tonne. Light iron and mixed iron have their own rows, so a load should not automatically take the heavy-iron rate. Check the unit before valuing a small weight in kg. Separate grades where practical, drain water from old radiators, and use appropriate lifting equipment for dense or awkward pieces.

How to identify iron

  • Cast iron is magnetic, dark grey and brittle — it can crack or snap rather than bend.
  • Fracture surfaces look grainy and grey.
  • Old column radiators and roll-top baths are almost always cast iron.

Preparation and contamination

  • Drain radiators fully before transport.
  • Remove brass valves and sell them separately as brass.
  • Cast iron is very heavy — use proper lifting equipment and get help.

What affects the price

  • Ferrous market prices, which move with steel.
  • Whether items are clean or have enamel, concrete or other materials attached.
  • Collection costs for heavy items.

Iron price FAQs

How much is scrap iron worth per tonne today?

The headline iron grade, Heavy iron, is up to £150 per tonne at Simvic in Chertsey (verified 25 Oct 2026). Lower grades and contaminated material pay less; confirm before travelling.

Are old cast iron radiators worth anything?

They are valued as scrap by weight unless they are restorable, in which case a reclamation dealer may pay more than a scrap yard.

Will a London scrap yard pay me in cash?

No. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, licensed dealers in England and Wales cannot pay for scrap metal in cash. Expect a bank transfer or cheque, and bring photo ID and proof of address, which dealers are required to record.
